Take to two wheels for a grand tour of Bowland

Follow in the wheel tracks of Sir Bradley Wiggins on a two-wheeled tour of the quiet lanes and off-road trails of the Forest of Bowland.

Cycle tourists can expect challenging rides with testing climbs among sensational scenery with spectacular views around every bend.

Visitors to the Forest Bowland can explore the same quiet country lanes for themselves by following one of the many self-guided road cycling routes that criss-cross the AONB.

From a breath-taking (quite literally) ride through the Trough of Bowland to the spectacular wild scenery of the Cross o’ Greet and Bowland Knotts passes into the fringes of the Yorkshire Dales, the AONB offers a huge range of day tours or longer cycle touring options.

As well as long distance road routes, the Gisburn Forest Hub near Slaidburn accommodates more than 30km of forest trails and tracks designed specifically for mountain bikers.

The basic skills loop is ideal for beginners looking to hone their bike-handling skills before tackling the more ambitious 9.5km (5.5 miles) Bottoms Beck Trail which includes steep curvy descents and a scenic riverside ascent.

More accomplished riders can test themselves on a more demanding 18km (11 miles) double loop known as ‘The 8’ with optional Black routes to spice things up still further.

For a more sedate two-wheeled tour of the Forest, an electric bicycle is the ideal solution to tackling the hills for slightly less energetic cyclists.

A local business is now offering electric bikes for visitors to hire for the day with an expanding network of charge points springing up at various cafes and pubs in some of the area’s pretty towns and villages.
